Psychoorganic syndrome is a progressive disease comparable to presenile dementia. Psychoorganic syndrome is a psychopathological complex of symptoms caused by organic brain disorders that is manifested by disorders of intellect and memory, as well as disorders of affect. Psychoorganic syndrome is often accompanied by asthenia. Psychoorganic syndrome occurs in atrophy of the brain in presenile and senile age (e.g. Alzheimer's disease, senile dementia), cerebrovascular diseases, CNS damages in syphilis, traumatic brain injury, intoxications, exposure to organic solvents such as toluene, chronic metabolic disorders, tumors and abscesses of the brain, encephalitis, as well as in diseases accompanied by convulsive seizures. Psychoorganic syndrome may occur at any age. However, its clinical picture is most pronounced in elderly and senile age. Depending on the nosological entity, the main manifestations of psychoorganic syndrome are expressed differently. Thus, in atrophic processes such as Alzheimer's disease, prevails the symptom of memory disorder, in Pick disease- mental disorders, in vascular diseases of the brain - disorders of affect. Patients with psychoorganic syndrome often complain about headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness when walking, poor tolerance to the heat, stuffiness, atmospheric pressure changes, loud sounds, neurological symptoms. Such symptoms if noticed in children, are called minimal brain dysfunction syndrome. Treatment of psychoorganic syndrome is directed at the main disease.
